BYBA to offer indoor events - autumn 2005
The British Youth Band Association (BYBA) is considering to run indoor events for ensembles, starting autumn 2005. According to a draft on BYBA's website, the association wants to test two or three competitive indoor events in October till December 2005.
The objectives if the indoor events are to introduce new performing groups to BYBA and the youth marching band activity, and to fill a natural void for most existing competitive units after the summer season. Performances must include musical instruments and movement. Any instruments including electronic instrumentation or backing track are allowed.
Furthermore dance, drama, theatrics, staging and props (within the limits), spoken work and amplification are allowed in the content as well. Two Effect-based judges would rank and rate the performances, not too centred on technical musicianship. Judging areas to consider are emotion, entertainment, integration of music and movement, use of available time and space, lighting and costume.
Ensembles must include wind and/or percussion, and may include guard. All ensembles will be judged equally. This will allow for 'winter drum line' style ensembles, full 'summer style' ensembles, and also ensembles from a non-marching background wishing to experiment in this activity, like school performing arts groups.
In 2006, the BYBA indoor events will be evaulated and extended.
