JANUARY

Phantom Regiment is the favourite with the drum corps fans when it comes to downloads. The powerhouse from Rockford - Illinois, is the undisputed leader, both in audio and video downloads. This was announced by Drum Corps International. Phantom Regiment's programme entitled 'Juliet' tops the audio list of the most downloaded shows of 2011. The same goes for the audio list of downloaded shows from through the years (1972-2010), and it even features in this top five twice. The 2010 show ('Into the Light') is in first place, and the 2008 show ('Spartacus') is in fourth.

Drum Corps Europe has posted its 10,000th news story on the website. The news page was launched in June 2002 and quickly grew into the largest drum corps news site in Europe. Drum corps fans know where to find the DCE website. Every day, between 1,000 and 2,000 people visit the site. A major exception is the month of September, when the number of visitors multiplies many times over.

With an ever-changing landscape of school district schedules and policies to navigate, Drum Corps International Housing Manager Jeff Cox took the opportunity at the 2012 DCI Annual Business Meetings and Conference Weekend to discuss some of the challenges he faces finding housing sites for drum corps on their annual summer tour. "Some of the things that are happening is that school systems are actually changing what they do", Cox said to Dan Potter of DCI.org. "For example, in Indianapolis, many schools are going to a 'balanced schedule', which means that they're starting school on 1st August, and obviously our event is taking place after that, so we're having to find other sites." DCI keeps looking for places.â?¨â?¨

FEBRUARY

Drum Corps Europe has a new Licensed Partner in Asia. The organisation of the Grand Prix Marching Band Championships has signed an agreement with DCE. That means that the competition in Indonesia is now also held under the umbrella of the DCE Competition Manual. The GPMB is the second organisation in Asia to cooperate with Drum Corps Europe. Earlier, the WBC in Malaysia decided to sign a cooperation agreement with DCE. Besides the use of the DCE judging system, the agreement also includes training for new and existing members of the judging panel in Asia by European and American members of the DCE judging panel. There are now a total of eight organisations that are working according to the DCE system.

25 units converged on Fenton Manor Sports Centre in Stoke On Trent for the UK Midlands Regional on Saturday 25th February. The class winners were Anchormen Cadets in the Cadet Class, Southern Knights in the Junior Class, Southern Knights in the A and Northern Academy in Open Class. In a change to the normal ending of show the highest scoring unit from the Cadet, Junior or A Class were given the chance to perform a repeat exhibition performance and this honour went to Southern Knights Juniors.

The Company from Barnsley - UK has launched a new website. After a long time without a full internet presence, a lot of effort has gone into creating the new site as well as updating our YouTube content, so that they can market themselves as a performance group. As for the website, The Company has chosen to go down the blog style route. This allows the group to set out goals and projects, and then their members will write about their experiences and tell visitors of the site what it is like to be a part of the organisation.

MARCH

For the past month, most bands have been back to outdoor practice, concert playing is put aside and drum carriages, marching folios and forward facing instruments dusted off in preparation for St Patrick's Day parades. For Irish bands it is the busiest day of the year, when huge crowds turn out for the parades and there are television appearances for most of the bands. Bands travel from town to town to fit in as many parades as possible, some bands can do up to five street parades on the one day. The Clondalkin Youth Band will participate in the biggest Parade, the Dublin St Patrick's day parade.â?¨â?¨

Drum Corps International, along with 15 other Indianapolis arts and cultural organizations, will share in $1.2 million in special cultural project grants awarded by LDI, Ltd. in celebration of LDI's 100th anniversary. Announcement of the awards was made during a special presentation. "LDI wanted to create a gift to the Indianapolis community that nurtured our company and allowed us to grow and thrive for 100 years", Andre Lacy, Chairman of the Board said. LDI is a Forbes-ranked holding company specializing in value-added distribution and logistics-supply chain businesses.

â?¨â?¨Nexus Drum & Bugle Corps from Sandy in Bedfordshire will be making their first trip to mainland Europe in 2012 to compete in the Drum Corps Netherlands contest in Huizen - The Netherlands on Saturday 23rd June. The corps, which was formed in 2010 and were the BYBA 2010 Division 3 league & Nationals champions and were 2nd in BYBA Associate Class and 7th in DCUK Open class in 2011, will be debuting their 2012 production 'iCorps - We've Got an App For That…' at the Dutch show. The staff and members are very much looking forward to their first foray into European competition and meeting up with corps from both The Netherlands and Germany in Huizen.â?¨

APRIL

Northern Academy are the new Open Class champions of Winter Guard United Kingdom. The guard beat 2011 champions Mayflower in Stoke-on-Trent. Both units were neck and neck right up to the end. Mayflower took the lead in the first contest, but was surpassed by Northern Academy halfway through the season, albeit with a small lead of 0.7 points. The two units didn't compete against each other directly in the two contests that followed. At the WGUK Prelims, Northern Academy won all captions (96.2). This remained unchanged at Finals, when the guard took the title of champion from Mayflower (94.1). The other classes were won by Southern Knights (92.2 in the A Class and 94.0 in the Junior Class), and Anchormen (91.8, Cadet Class).

Beatrix has prolonged its CGN World Class title. The guard won the top class of Color Guard Nederland with a good five point margin after an unbeaten season. Beatrix scored 82.00 points and also won all captions. The Pride from Huizen came second with 76.6 points, and Sensation followed in third with 73.8 points. Intension received its first Open Class title, with 78.8 points. Jubal Indoor Percussion has pocketed its first CGN title.

The indoor drumline of The Company won the European title in the International Marching Class at the IPE Championships in Tournai - Belgium. The win by the group was very convincing. The Company now has both the European drum corps title and the indoor percussion title. In Doornik, The Company scored 83.17 points, beating Unik Star from France (67.83) and Got Motion from Sweden (65.83). In the European Class, the Beverly Drumband (74.50) beat Magic Evolution (28.83). Music Black Show took the Concert Class title (61.00) and Liberty Drum Corps came second (47.00). A champion was also crowned in the Junior Class for the first time. Auranja Junior became the first IPE Junior Champion (55.17), ahead of Unik Star Junior (31.33).��

The winter guard Onyx from Dayton - Ohio has been crowned WGI World Class champion. The guard beat Santa Clara Vanguard by one full point in Dayton, Ohio. Onyx attained a high score of 98.75, over one and a half point above last year's highest score. The guard from Dayton managed to win in all captions. Last year's champion, Santa Clara Vanguard (with the Dutch Danielle Bernaert) came second. Pride of Cincinnati came third. In Scholastic World Class, Flanagan HS from Pembroke Pines - Florida earned the title.

The Staffordshire Knights will enter the DCE European Championships in Kerkrade after all. The English corps will replace the Clonmel Bluehawks. The Irish corps had to withdraw due to organisational circumstances. DCE regrets that the Clonmel Bluehawks will not be attending, but of course we would like to extend a warm welcome Staffordshire Knights! The Staffordshire Knights have attended the DCE Championships for the last two years. Due to the large number of corps registering, they initially were placed on the waiting list this year.

MAYâ?¨

â?¨The ticket sales for the DCE European Championships has started at an incredible speed once again. Section A was completely sold out within an hour and a half. The luxury Super Seats are also going fast. No less than 900 tickets were sold within twenty minutes. DCE is very happy with the great interest for the European Championships at the Parkstad Limburg Stadium. Drum corps fans have more than enough reasons to attend. All European top corps can once again be admired in Kerkrade.â?¨â?¨

Drum Corps United Kingdom has announced the details of the corps entries for each DCUK contest this coming season. Now all Corps have nominated which Class they wish to enter DCUK can advise that, due to very low entry for a specific all season long A Class, the structure for 2012 season will run in an identical fashion to the past few seasons. This means that, with the exception of Junior Class, all Corps will compete in Open Class up to and including Prelims with the Top 8 from Prelims then competing in Open Class Finals with the remainder competing for the A Class title but still judged to Open Class criteria).â?¨â?¨

About 30 DCE judges will be gathering in Dadizele - Belgium for the big annual training weekend. For the first time, a session with instructors has also been scheduled. Every year in May, the Drum Corps Europe judges get together to prepare for the upcoming drum corps season, and to study various aspects of the judging system based on the DCE Competition Manual. The weekend is coordinated by Brian Yothers and Bob Thomas.

â?¨The start of the European drum corps season has become a success for Juliana from Middelburg. Both Juliana and their feeder corps Johan Friso topped their class with 64.55 and 63.05 points respectively at the first drum corps show of the season in Middelburg. The difference between the winner and the second placed corps in the Premier Class was small. Jubal Drum & Bugle Corps from Dordrecht had to settle for second place, but were only 0.3 points behind the winner Juliana. Die Tambourijnen came third (34.25).â?¨


JUNE

Jubal Drum & Bugle Corps and Showband Marum from the Netherlands have decided not to travel to San Felice sul Panaro this year. Both corps had been invited for shows at the beginning of July, but due to the recent heavy earthquakes in the city and surrounding area, both clubs have decided not to make the trip. The Italian San Felice sul Panaro and the surrounding area have been heavily hit by three powerful earthquakes in the past few weeks. The corps said in a statement that the risks for their members are too great. Moreover, they expect that the people in San Felice probably have more important things to deal with than having to house show corps.

Reigning European Champion The Company from Barnsley topped the first DCUK contest in Bradford. The corps scored 68.00 points. In the Junior Class, the Kidsgrove Scouts Juniors were the strongest with 43.95 points. Eight corps competed in the Open Class (Premier Class). The current DCUK champions Kidsgrove Scouts ended in 2rd place (65.55). The 6th from Brighton came third (51.90), followed by the Poynton Commodores (50.30), Staffordshire Knights (49.75), East Coast Elite (46.65), Revolution (42.00) and Beeches (38.85). In the Junior Class, the winners were the Kidsgrove Scouts Juniors (43.95). The Concord Allstars came second (36.45).

Both Jubal and Jong Jubal topped the Drum Corps Netherlands contest (Huizen) in the Premier Class and the Junior Class respectively. Jubal passed the 70-point mark in the Premier Class (70.05). Juliana came second (68.90), and Beatrix came third (67.65). The first non-Dutch participant, Starriders, can be found in fourth place with 62.10 points. Their compatriot Showband Rastede finished in fifth place with 57.30 points. Con Spirit ended in 6th place (53.00). In the Junior Class, Jong Jubal came first (68.35). Jong Beatrix came second (65.05), followed by Johan Friso (63.05) and Jong-Holland Junioren (55.04).

Carolina Crown took top honors (1st, 76.90) in Muncie - Indiana. The Madison Scouts came in second place (72.80) surpassing The Cavaliers (3rd, 71.70) at DCI Central Indiana. Crown's seventh straight victory on the 2012 DCI Tour also marked the first time in more than a decade that the Madison Scouts bested their Midwestern brethren, The Cavaliers. The last time the Scouts put up a higher score than the Green Machine was 5th July, 1998. Though they're happy with their victory at Ball State University's Scheumann Stadium, Carolina Crown drum major Mike Roche said that there's still a long road ahead for his corps towards the DCI World Championships in August.

��JULY

The second show of Drum Corps United Kingdom in Woking was topped by the Kidsgrove Scouts. The reigning British drum corps champions obtained 69.80 points. The Black Knights came second with 66.20 points. Just like in the first DCUK contest, the corps performed before a packed stand in Woking. The Black Knights won the Visual Ensemble and Percussion captions. All other captions went to Kidsgrove. The Company did not participate in Woking. Eight corps performed in the Open Class (Premier Class) and four in the Junior Class. That class was won by Thurrock Marching Brass (38.25). The Cadence Juniors came second (35.20).

Joe Rodwell amd Carl Curtis, UK musical consultants for Vintage Percussion over the past few years, have been appointed as the new musical design team for the 2013 Unik Star Percussion Ensemble in France. For their new season, arrangments and compositions for this french unit are written by Joe Rodwell (front ensemble/keyboard), David Lemant (battery) and Carl Curtis (cymbals), the drill design is created by Benoit Sueur. Jérôme Capoen and Georges Lecomte are responsible for the front ensemble.â?¨â?¨

At the DCUK show in Stoke On Trent The Company scored 77.55 points with their show 'Red Riding Hood', which placed them more than 3.5 points ahead of the competition. The DCUK Open Class (Premier Class) top three competed directly against eachother for the first time this season, and they all made a big step in scores. The Kidsgrove Scouts Juniors topped the Junior Class (52.45).��

Several British corps and bands have already or will be taking part in significant Olympic events, locally, regionally and in London. Cleethorpe's East Coast Elite played a major role in their town's welcome and hosting of the Olympic Torch over 26th and 27th June. They performed an original fanfare written by Mark Bolton as 92 year old Jack Andrew carried the torch into the Olympic event. The band then paraded through the 8,000 crowd and after the cauldron was lit. East Cost Elite then performed a static interpretation of their 2012 show 'The Race'. The Company Performance Ensemble will take part in the closing ceremony of the Olympics.

AUGUST

WGI mourns the passing of Fred J. Miller, a master showman of the pageantry arts and integral force of the indoor color guard and percussion activity. A resident of Centerville, Ohio, he was born on March 6, 1932, the son of Orville and Betty Miller. He passed away at the age of 80. Mr. Miller was a founding member of the United States Twirling Association and founded the Miller's Blackhawks Twirling Corps that established a record that is unequalled in the twirling world by winning national championships every year from 1956 through 1968. The next evolution of the Miller's Blackhawks was to enter the color guard world becoming one of the most memorable and impressive groups of the 80s and 90s. The Blackhawks personified Fred's dedication to excellence, showmanship and sense of family. The guard earned a silver medal in only their second appearance at the world championships in the newly created A Class in 1980.â?¨

Blue Devils completed an undefeated season, winning their 15th Drum Corps International World Championship, their fourth in the last six years. With a final score of 98.70, the California corps also took home hardware from Lucas Oil Stadium for caption awards in Visual Performance, General Effect, Percussion and Color Guard. Blue Devils corps director David Gibbs said although he can't rank how this title compares to the corps' 14 others, he can say the 2012 corps is one of the best performing ensembles he's ever had. "We're just blessed," he said. "We're thankful that the whole activity is going great. This is one of the best ensembles we've had." With their second place finish, Carolina Crown (97.65) tied their record high placement.

In Quiberon the second Marching Music France contest took place, with a lot of spectators in the stand. Beatrix from The Netherlands was one of the competitors and won the Premier Class. Kadoudal won the Junior Class at their home town show. Beatrix also did an open rehearsal for French drum corps fans. The MMF show is the only French contest certified by Drum Corps Europe.

â?¨â?¨The second show of the IMBA 2012 season took place in Ballygar, Galway where the victory was taken by the Tallaght Youth Band Marching Vikings. The Dublin corps obtained a score of 57.65 points. Second place was taken by the Clonmel Bluehawks with 56.45 points. It was two out of two for the Vikings who also took the first show of the season in their home town of Tallaght, Dublin on 7th July 2012. This has been the Vikings' most successful start to a season having not won 2 competitions in a row or managed to beat the Bluehawks since 2006.

â?¨â?¨The Kidsgrove Scouts have taken the Brass and Color Guard caption at the Drum Corps Associates contest in Pennsauken. With a score of 88.15, the corps placed only 1.45 points behind Cadets2 and came second. Kidsgrove has done very well in the DCA competition. "We were pleased with the performances, and we adjusted well to the heat", members said after the show in Pennsauken. "There is a positive vibe in the corps. The crowd reaction was great, with a standing ovation. We are loving it."â?¨


SEPTEMBER

The Kidsgrove Scouts have achieved the 7th place at the  Drum Corps Associates (DCA) World Championships in Annapolis - Maryland, USA only missing 6th place by less than two tenths of a point and placing 3rd in the Colour Guard caption. The DCA 2012 World Champions were the Buccaneers from Reading - Pennsylvania, scoring an impressive 99.03 winning every caption in the process.

â?¨The Tallaght Youth Band Marching Vikings and Ravens Marching Showband have been crowned Irish champions in the Premier Class and Junior Class respectively. The scores are considerably higher than at last year's championships. The Clonmel Bluehawks defended their Premier Class title and only missed it by 0.35 points. Both corps raised their score from the mid 50s last year to over 60 this year. Clondalkin Youth Band ended in third place (52.05), followed by Tallaght Festival Band (47.90) and Inbhear Mór Marchers (43.70). While Ravens Marching Showband took top honours in the Junior Class (72.90), Athlon Town Youth Marching Band came second (61.00).

â?¨â?¨Juliana from Middelburg and Jong Jubal from Dordrecht successfully defended their Dutch titles. In the DCN Finals, the corps won the Premier and Junior Class respectively, just like last year. Many spectators enjoyed wonderful shows and an exciting fight for the title in Dordrecht. The DCN season was incredibly exciting this year. Juliana won the first contest in their home town Middelburg. Jubal then took the lead in Huizen, but ultimately it was Juliana who won the Dutch title.

Drum Corps Europe has launched a new website. Instead of using an existing Content Management System, the website has internally been developed by DCE and includes a lot of new features like corps pages for all corps that participate in the European Music Games. The new website was received very well by drum corps fans.â?¨

â?¨The Kidsgrove Scouts extended their British title in at the DCUK Championships. In a truly thrilling battle with rival The Company, Kidsgrove won the Open Class with a score of 84.15. The weather could not have been better at Mansfield Town FC on Saturday for the 33rd British Drum Corps Championships as the 2012 season was brought to an exciting climax. The Company was strongest in Prelims, but in the evening the Kidsgrove Scouts passed them. Both brought a phenomenal show to the stadium of Mansfield, and the difference was minimal. In the A-Class, first place went to Beeches, and the winners of the Junior Class were the Kidsgrove Scouts Juniors.

The Company has prolonged its European title in the Premier Class at the DCE European Championships in Kerkrade. Their show entitled 'Red Riding Hood' scored 87.15 points, which was 1.55 more than the Kidsgrove Scouts (85.60). More than 2,500 drum corps fans in the packed stand of the Parkstad Limburg Stadium were treated with some unbelievable drum corps action. While The Company took the title with quite a margin, the Kidsgrove Scouts appeared to be the crowd's favourite corps. Their 'Valley of the Kings' resulted in several standing ovations during their performance. For the first time ever, there was an all British top three at the European Championships. With a show entitled 'Trapped', the Black Knights ended in third place which is the highest placement ever for them at DCE (85.35).

OCTOBER

The webcast of the DCE European Championships that was run live by Drum Corps Europe attracted many viewers. The webcast was viewed more than 13,000 times. The number of viewers massively increases every year. Last year, the internet broadcast was viewed 7,000 times. This year that number nearly doubled. The webcast was more extensive than ever, with a multi-camera recording, a presenter on the field (Robby Overvliet) and two analysts (Paul Doop and Joe Fitzpatrick) from the stands.��

The pinnacle of the 2012 BYBA season concluded with the BYBA National Championships. In Division 1, 37th Kingswood took 1st place followed by East Coast Elite in 2nd place and Beeches PE in 3rd place. Derby Midshipmen took 1st place in the Associate Division as the only unit in competition in their division on the day. Cadence took a 1st place win in Division 2, Division 3 saw 4th Uckfield becoming the champions, and 37th Kingswood Cadets took 1st place in Cadets.

The Renegades Drum & Bugle Corps from San Fransisco are planning a trip to Europe. The corps announced this on their Facebook page. According to the Renegades, Drum Corps Associates raised concerns with Renegades in regards to housing difficulties during last month's championships. "Our housing site complained, and DCA's decision was to suspend the Renegades from DCA competition in 2013", said Greg Gilmen of the Renegades on Facebook. "So, how do we move forward? Let's go to Europe!"

The Company Performance Ensemble will be moving their operational headquarters from Barnsley - South Yorkshire to Newstead Community Centre in Newstead Village - Nottingham, as from November 2012. Discussions have been taking place over the summer months with the Board of Trustees of Newstead Community Centre (a former Miners Welfare Institute located close to Junction 27 of the M1) in relation to The Company becoming a tenant and service provider based within the centre and the local community. Director of The Company Mark Nicholson spoke of the excitement of the organisation in finding such a fantastic facility that fully meets the needs and requirements of the corps.

��The Glassmen Drum & Bugle Corps need financial help. David Stinson, Glassmen's Interim Executive Director, has determined that the corps will receive $550,000 from members, DCI appearance fees, and fund-raisers, but the anticipated annual operating budget is over $850,000. This leaves the Glassmen with a gap of $300,000. The Glassmen are appealing to drum corps fans to save their organisation. They need to raise the $300,000 before the end of the year, preferably by Thanksgiving, to ensure the corps can get from auditions weekend to the post-season banquet and home again. Stinson is confident that with the help, "The Glassmen can overcome our fiscal challenges and field a corps for the 2013 season."

NOVEMBER

Kadoudal Drum & Bugle Corps from Quiberon wants to become a Premier Class Corps next year. This will be the next step in the successful development of the French corps to date. Kadoudal uses a video to explain that the objective is to get into the Premier Class instead of the Junior Class in 2013. Auditions will be held next month for interested parties of all ages. The corps has already compiled a list of monthly camps and a weekly rehearsal schedule. In addition, they are planning a 15 day Master Class during the French April holidays. International instructors will be involved in this. And finally, a weeklong 'summer camp' will be held in August.

â?¨â?¨The BBC will air a programme about the re-launch of Thurrock Marching Brass. The band closed its door in 1989 after sixteen years but reformed in 2010, lead by Paul Morgan. After spending some time filming the kids at rehearsals and also following them to the 2012 BYBA Nationals, the final editing of the programme relating to marching bands is complete and an air date has been released. The programme centres around the re-launching of one of the UK's most prestigious marching bands after an absence of 21 years. It follows the reasons why the band was reformed and where the idea initially came from, and has some interviews with key personnel within the organisation who give their own account of the current and future of what has been restarted for the youngsters ofThurrock. The band was followed to the 2012 BYBA Nationals.

Strängnäs Drum & Bugle Corps from Sweden will once again be travelling to the United States next year. The corps will participate in the Drum Corps International competition. This is the fifth time that the Swedes are making the crossing. Although Strängnäs does not participate in the European drum corps competition, no other European corps has completed so many tours to America in such a short timeâ??â??. The last time the corps travelled to America was in 2010. The Europeans then came fifteenth in the Open Class Semi Finals with a score of 70.600. Two years earlier, they finished in 21st place in the Open Class. Juliana Drum & Bugle Corps has cancelled their USA tour for next year. According to the association, the external risks are too high. They are now preparing a European tour.

DECEMBER

The 'tour' that was recently undertaken by DCE representatives â??â??to meetings of partner organisations and corps was very successful. DCE board members attended meetings in the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Ireland. Last year, Drum Corps Europe had to put a stop to the European symposium because of the limited interest of corps. The board members of DCE then decided to travel to annual meetings of partner organisations themselves in order to reach out to more corps. The latter was very successful. In total, Drum Corps Europe directly exchanged views with 35 corps, about four times as many as the symposium would allow.

The DCE European Championships 2013 (Saturday 28th September) can expect another wonderful line-up. The event once again has participants from the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Ireland, France and Italy. All the national champions will be there, as well as other top corps from various countries. From Great Britain, hotshots The Company, Kidsgrove Scouts, Black Knights, Commodores, The 6th and Nexus will compete. The Netherlands will be represented by Jubal, Juliana and Beatrix, and for Germany Starriders, Showband Rastede, Heartliner and Wolper Löwen will take part. The French Kadoudal will compete in the Premier Class for the first time, and the reigning Irish champions, Tallaght Youth Band Marching Vikings, are returning after their debut this year. Besana Secutores and Mosson will be the Italian representatives in the Premier Class. The Junior Class is also very international. For the Kidsgrove Scouts Juniors, this year was the first time they took part in the European competition, and they will be coming back next year. The Ravens from Ireland will also be back next year.â?¨â?¨

Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps from Boston - Massachusetts, will march in the official inauguration parade of President Obama. Boston has participated in this parade before, but that was when President Johnson took office. As well as Boston, several other bands will be participating, including the South Shore Drill Team. This organisation also regularly brings out a winter guard in the Winter Guard International circuit.

â?¨Drum Corps Europe has teamed up with the Rasteder Musiktage. During the famous multi-day music and show event, the participants of the show contest will be judged according to the DCE Competition Manual. The Rasteder Musiktage are well-known in Europe. Each year, over three thousand musicians from ten different countries travel to Germany in the first weekend of July. The discussions with the organisation about cooperation started after the European Championships in Kerkrade and the organisations have now reached an agreement. The DCE certified show contest will take place on Saturday 6th July, and the top three participants will then continue on to the open European Championships on Sunday.
