Brigadiers don't get bingo license back

Publish Date: 27 Feb 2005 - 934 views

As the Syracuse Brigadiers Drum and Bugle Corps practiced Saturday, the players displayed confidence in their abilities. But there was still an uneasiness regarding the future of the corps. That's because the group's bingo operation, its main source of revenue, is closed. "We need the money that's derived form the bingo operation to keep the drum & bugle corps on the field," said executive board member Gary Frost.

The Syracuse Brigadiers went to the State Supreme Court in an attempt to reopen their Bingo Hall. But the court delivered news they didn't want to hear. News 10 Now's Adam Chodak reports. The state Wagering and Racing Board revoked the Brigadiers bingo license in December saying they were running bingo as a commercial outfit instead of a charitable one.

The Brigadiers tried to convince a State Supreme Court judge earlier this month to overturn the decision arguing they weren't given due process. Judge Thomas Murphy came back with his decision. He denied the Brigadiers petition claiming the state Wagering and Racing Board's determination had a sound basis in reason and the Brigadiers were not denied due process.

Those with the Board didn't want to talk at length about the case because it's still in the court system, but they did say they were satisfied with the decision." Now the case should go up to the Appellate Division, where the Brigadiers will argue their side once again.

In the meantime, the players will keep playing as Brigadiers uncertain of when they'll have to stop. (Source: drumcorpsplanet.com, Text: news10now.com)
