First Asian judges certified by DCE

The World Band Championship (WBC) recently held a three day Judges College from in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The WBC Judges College which was conducted by the Director of Education of Drum Corp Europe (DCE), Bob Thomas from the USA, is aimed at producing the first batch of certified WBC Judges for its Championship Series. A total 13 candidates from Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand attended the college which was also moderated by the Technical Director of WBC, Wil Bijl from Holland.

"We are indeed excited about this 1st batch of judges for the WBC and hope that this programme would further propel the standard of judging in Asia", said Dato' Zulkifli Ishak, Chief Executive Officer of the WBC. The WBC was established to advance the level of understanding and develop the marching band community across borders and boundaries in the coming years through its Championship Series, sanctioned events and seminars.

Bob Thomas was overwhelmed by the commitment and determination from the candidates. "I am surprised by the abilities and level of understanding of these candidates throughout the college" said Thomas. "The candidates have demonstrated great interest to equip themselves with greater knowledge and understanding to become better judges" he added. This first batch of judges is expected to be involved in the Malaysia World Band Competition 2010, from 23rd July to 2nd August 2010.

The Judges College organized by WBC was also attended by a representative from the Malaysian Band Association (MBA). "We see the synergy between WBC and the Malaysian Band Association as the first leap to internationalise our Malaysian bands but also our local experts and judges" said Associate Professor Zaharul Lailiddin Saidon, Vice President of the MBA. Malaysia is represented by 5 candidates namely from its local universities, state education department and teacher's training institute.
