Alan Thompson to announce DCE Championships
Alan Thompson will be the announcer for this year's DCE European Championships. The experienced Brit will succeed Andy Hewlett, who is participating this year with the Kidsgrove Scouts.
The drum corps fans will have to get used to not seeing Andy, as he has been the voice of DCE since the early years. The board of Drum Corps Europe is delighted that Alan has agreed to be the host this year. Alan Thompson has been active as an announcer in the United Kingdom since the nineties. He has been the announcer for the DCUK and WGUK Championships for fifteen years. He was also active in various BYBA competitions and in the WAMSB World Championships held in England in 2004.
Alan did not have to think long when DCE asked him early this year to welcome the audience at the European Championships as well. "I have been coming to the DCE Championships for many years and although I always enjoy it as a spectator, sitting still is not for me," admits Alan. "I prefer to get involved. So when DCE asked me to do this, it was music to my ears. I can still watch the corps, but now I also play an active part in the event."
Alan has a rich drum corps history as a member of corps including the 6th Hove Scout Band, Southwinds and Southern Knights. He has also been on the board of DCUK and WGUK and has been the Chairman of Marching & Performing Arts UK (MPAUK) since 2006, which is responsible for both organisations.
He is also looks forward to the DCE Championships this year. "I think it's a fantastic event. It is an ideal opportunity to get the top corps from all over Europe together", says Alan. "I think my favourite part on 29th September will be at the end of the day, when after all the work of the past months by the corps I will get to say the last few crucial words: "The 2012 DCE Championships are..."
