Shine to revive fortunes of brass band for BBC2
BBC2 hopes to do for local brass bands what 'Strictly' has done for ballroom dancing with a three-part Shine Television series fronted by Sue Perkins. The 3 x 60-minute 'Band for Britain' will follow Perkins as she tries to rebuild a dwindling brass band in Dinnington - South Yorkshire and prepare them for a major competition.
The series is co-executive produced by former 'Strictly' executive Karen Smith and is expected to air in a 9pm slot during spring 2010. The show will blend the competition of a talent contest with the quirkly feel of "a real-life 'Brassed Off'", said a source. The South Yorkshire-based band had dwindled to just five musicians prior to the show after many of its members had either left the group or died. This allowed for both emotional moments and incidental humour.
BBC2 controller Janice Hadlow ordered the show with Mirella Breda, who said she hoped that the warm-hearted programme would encourage people to take up a musical instrument. (Text: broadcastnow.co.uk, source: Adriaan de Kruiff)
