Crossmen, Buccaneers drum major killed in crash
Former Crossmen and Reading Buccaneers drum major Joseph Kempf was killed Sunday night after being struck by a car while helping a motorist on an Interstate in Pennsylvania. He was 23.
Police say Kempf had pulled over to help a stranded motorist on Interstate 80 in Clinton County late Sunday night. Investigators said the driver of the car lost control and spun out, hitting Kempf. He later died at the hospital.
Several online tributes have been posted for Kempf, who was drum major for the Buccaneers in 1999, 2000, 2001, and again in 2003. He was the drum major for the Crossmen in 2002 and a member of the corps visual staff the past two seasons.
Friends and family say Kempf was always lending a hand to others, and that he was one of the friendliest people you could ever meet. George Hopkins, Executive Director of YEA! said, "Joe was a great drum major and a better person. He was kind and helpful in every way with the corps. We were all glad to have him with the Crossmen in any capacity. Clearly, the death of any young man is a tragedy but somehow, this makes each of us particularly sad, especially at this time of the year."
The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the Crossmen. (Text: drumcorpsplanet.com)
