Successful clinic weekend for European judges

Publish Date: 13 Feb 2006 - 676 views

In the weekend of 4th-5th February, Drum Corps Germany and Drum Corps Europe jointly organised the second edition of the annual training weekend for European judges. Judges from Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands took part in the training course and agreed afterwards that it again proved to be a particularly instructive and practical clinic.

The weekend took place in the German city of Neustadt am Rübenberge, near to Hannover, and was again hosted by DCI Judge and DCE Director of Education, Bob Thomas, who has also acted as judge at the DCE Championships in recent years. DVDs and videos were used to give a deeper understanding of the judging philosophy.

Topics covered included the judging system (the 'criteria reference scale'), the allocation of scores (rating & ranking), the practice of tape comments and the responsibilities of the judges. Attention was also paid to judging 'performance' in the field, which is an important theme for this year.

Afterwards, the judges all agreed that this type of training is very important for increasing the quality of European judging even further. Bob Thomas himself was very impressed with the level of participation and commitment shown during the training course. Another training course will be held in the weekend of 4th and 5th April, this time under the leadership of the Chief Judge, Adriaan de Kruiff, and Judge/Visual Instructor, Tony Mackenzie-Jones.

After the DCE European Championships, another training day will be hosted by Bob Thomas on the 24th September. A clinic for prospective judges has already taken place on Saturday 21st January.
