Barry Oosterwaal joins Kidsgrove Scouts staff
The Kidsgrove Scouts have announced that Barry Oosterwaal has joined the 2006 brass staff line-up. Barry Oosterwaal began his life in music in 1987 as a baritone player with the Jong Jubal Drum & Bugle Corps in Dordrecht - The Netherlands, moving Jubal in 1990. Following Jubal, Barry marched with the Madison Scouts in 1991 and again in 1995. Between times, Barry played trombone in the Dutch Army band. In 1996 Barry moved to the US, and began his in depth studies in trombone performance at the University of Wisconsin â?? Whitewater, where he studied with Steve Wiest - former trombonist for and current arranger for Maynard Ferguson.
From 1997 to 2001 Barry was the assistant director for the University of Wisconsin - Whitewater marching band. In 1999 Barry served on the administrative staff of the Madison Scouts, and in 2000 he taught the Capital Sound D&B Corps. In 2003 Barry finished his Masters in Trombone Performance from the University of Wisconsin â?? Milwaukee.
Currently Barry keeps a busy freelance schedule playing in the Milwaukee and Chicago area with bands such as Cold Sweat, Salsa Power, and Swing Nouveau. Besides playing steadily with those groups, he has played with (among others) Slide Hampton, Frankie Negron, Doug Lawrence Orchestra, and has recently recorded on Steve Wiest's first solo album (to be released early 2006).
Besides playing, Barry is an avid arranger and has written for various bands in Chicago, the US Air Force Big Band, and drum & bugle corps like Jubal, Starriders, Capital Sound, and Pioneer.
