Drum Corps Europe to certify contests
Contests held by drum corps organisations in Europe satisfying conditions set by DCE can be regarded as 'certified' from now on. In order to comply, the contest must be judged on the basis of the DCE judging manual and the performances of the corps must be assessed by DCE certified judges.
For those corps taking part in these contests, this means it will be possible to compare their scores to one another. "This is a big step forward", says DCE Chairman, Marcel Matthijsse. "At the moment, points awarded at DCG, DCN, DCUK and BYBA contests cannot be compared to each other. 60 points in Germany have a different 'value' to the same number of points in the UK. The national organisations have promised their cooperation for this certification, which will signify an end to this problem in future. This has also given rise to a European competition in the summer season, in which corps from across the whole of Europe can choose to take part. It also guarantees a build up to the ultimate challenge between all the corps at the DCE Championships."
All DCN contests will be certified this year in any case. In the UK, BYBA will be holding a try-out with the DCE judging manual in July, and, on the basis of this, will examine whether a certified contest is still possible this season. DCUK will also be looking at DCE certification. It only depends now on the composition of the judging teams. The DCE judging manual is already being used by all drum corps organisations in Europe.
