BYBA judges adjudicate New Year Day's parade

Publish Date: 08 Jan 2007 - 617 views

The British Youth Band Association continues to support Destination Events/London Parade New Year Day Parade. This year was Roy Powell's sixth attendance as a judge plus this year Paul Cartwright was also honored to be invited to join the international judging panel to cover the bands and corps on the parade and the concerts.

Over one hundred acts participated in the world's biggest parade which marches from Parliament Street through to Piccadilly. This was the 21st parade and 18 High School Marching Bands from the United States, plus units from the UK, along with London Borough floats and societies paraded past an estimated over 150,000 people who lined the parade route. The concerts were held at Westminster Central Methodist Hall on the two previous nights to the Parade.

In commenting about the concert series Paul said, "I felt privileged to adjudicate alongside colleagues from the States and assessing all styles of music from concert bands, a choir, a violin trio, jazz ensembles and a steel band who traveled from the Cayman Islands. The unit who impressed me most was the Troy High School Symphonic Band, from Michigan - USA."

The Centurion Show Band from York received an invitation to participate in the Parade following the outstanding performance they gave at Edinburgh, Easter 2006. A number of smaller non-BYBA members showed good potential to join their reformulated Division 4 for 2007.
