Drum corps history: "I started with the cadet corps Johan Friso from
Middelburg in 1974, when I was ten years of age. I played the piccolo.
In 1981 I joined Juliana, and in 1982 a new group was founded in
Middelburg, called Blue Spirit. In Blue Spirit I was a drummer, and I
became the drum major of the corps in 1998. After that year, Blue
Spirit ceased to exist, and I became the drum major of Juliana."
Working for DCE from: 2004
Why? "People from DCE asked me, and it is great to see so many former Blue Spirit
members in DCE. Drum corps is in my blood. Instead of watching drum
corps from the stand, I wanted to help the activity. When I see those
corps members in the stadium, waiting to enter the competition field, I
know the excitement they must be feeling at that moment."
Is it fun off the field? "Yes, it's a lot of fun. I run the DCE help
desk together with Erik van Leerzem and David Baden. We're having a
great time. Corps come to the help desk to report, and visitors come
here to pick up their admission tickets. It's nice to see that people
appreciate our help. It's my third year in the help desk team."
Greatest drum corps memory: "As a marching member, the 1997 season with
Blue Spirit was phenomenal. I played the top bass drum that year. We
played music from several recent movies, like 'The Rock', 'Independence
Day', and 'Twister'. We had a very strong corps that season.
As a DCE staff member, the Kortrijk show with Blue Devils competing was fantastic. I
haven't had the change to see DCI shows, so this show was very exciting."
