Discussion Group UK closed down

Publish Date: 12 May 2006 - 502 views

The Discussion Group United Kingdom (DGUK) has been closed down. The last few days, things got out of hand on the forums, with bullying attacks on individuals. The DGUK was open to everyone, without a registration procedure for users.

Within a short space of 24 hours, the forum administrator (who uses the alias 'Bob Monkhouse') received e-mails from 74 different people complaining about the abusive comments on the site. In addition to this, a number of comments were left on the discussion page outlining peoples outrage. "When the site was set up, I expected there to be a lot of open discussion and criticism", the forum administrator stated on the DCUK forum. "As I do not have the time to continuously monitor the site,I have had no choice but to close the site."

By tracking the computer numbers from where the abusive messages were sent, Monkhouse saw that the majority of abusive comments were sent from three computers only: "So only three individuals have lead to this. Even more bizarrely one thread on the discussion page contained 24 messages all sent from the same computer, so presumably the same individual. It is with great regret that this action has had to be taken."
