Interview: Dutch guard member Boston Crusaders
Boston Crusaders guard member Monique Kalle, 21, will be aging out this week, but not in her hometown. Kalle is from the Netherlands, with drum corps experience marching with Jubal.
"I'm glad that I decided to come here for the experience," Kalle said. "For me it's sad that I'm aging out, but I feel sad for those who have marched for six years. They are really having a difficult time. At home I don't have to age out. I can do it forever." Coming to America was a decision she made after talking with a few friends who gave DCI a try. "A couple of my friends back home marched with different corps. So I started thinking about it. When I toured with Jubal, I saw live U.S. drum corps for the first time and I started thinking about it. I decided to go ahead since this was my last chance. I sent an audition tape to different corps and was accepted here."
The difference between the two country's drum corps is extreme, explained Kalle. "We have more rehearsing here. It's more like a hobby at home. Here after three months it's over. We do it all year at home, performing on Saturdays from May until September.
Tonight however, "It was a really good show. The whole day was good. The rehearsal was a little windy, actually storming at rehearsal. But I had a lot of fun in the show." Her personal message to folks back home: "Ik hou van drum corps!" (I love drum corps!) (Text: dci.org)
