Initiative in UK to join forces
'Building on Success' is an initiative of the British Federation of Youth Marching Band Organisations. It's a proposal for future joint competition and festival events in the UK.
"The 2004 World Showband Championships and Music Festival In Bournemouth in July was, by almost every measure other than financial, a resounding success", said John Boyington, chairman of the federation. "The federations primary goal is to add value to the activity within the UK by undertaking work at a strategic level in pursuit of goals which individual organisations find difficult to achieve."
Taking the 2004 format as a model, the chairman proposes that the federation, acting as an umbrella organisation but with the active engagement of all of its member organisations, organises a biennial competition and festival for all engaged in the UK activity. The Festival would take place at a seaside resort where access exists both to the general public and to other activities and facilities for band members.
The timing of the event would be as this year in late July to coincide with the start of most school holidays. The event would be slightly shorter than the World Championships, perhaps starting on the Thursday night with a social event and continuing from Friday to Sunday with a finish in the early evening.
The first UK Festival of Marching Youth Music could take place in 2005, in order to capitalise on the enthusiasm and interest generated by this years event but would thereafter run every two years.
