Rochester's Empire Statesmen surfed to another first place finish in the Ocean State Classic contest in Pierce Field in East Providence RI on Sunday, on the strength of top visual and effect scores. The Statesmen's brass section also topped the field, helping roll up a total score of 89.875.
Syracuse Brigadiers, as in every other contest this season finished right behind the Empire Statesmen, with a score of 88.613. The Bushwackers, of Harrison - New Jersey, scored 88.175, the same score as last week in Kingston - New York, to again finish in third spot. The Caballeros from Hawthorne - New Jersey were fourth with 82.8, and The Connecticut Hurricanes finished in fifth spot with 76.65.
The Ocean State Classic was sponsored by Drum Corps International (DCI), the organization which presides over junior drum and bugle corps contests in North America, as part of its World Championships event held this year in Gillette Stadium in Foxboro - Massachusetts.
The competition heats up considerably over the next two weeks, with Statesmen, the defending 2004 Drum Corps Associates (DCA) world champions meeting the front-running The Buccaneers from Reading - Pensylvania next week in the P&C Stadium in Syracuse, and again on August 27th in the 'Tournament of Drums' in Corning - New York.
