Northern Star crowned BYBA Champions 2004
September 18th 2004 was a historic date in the history of Northern Star. After 10 years of competing in the British Youth Band Association the corps were finally crowned BYBA champions.
Here is a snip from Northern Star's website:
"A good afternoon rehearsing in Perry Park saw the corps in a great mood as they made the transfer over to Butts Park Stadium in coventry for the national finals. There was no doubt in any of the members minds as they assembled in the unity circle before show time that the talking was indeed over. Now was the time to open up and show people exactly what they were capable of.
And boy did they show them. As showtime arrived you could almost feel the desire burning inside of this talented corps. A good response from the crowd kept the hype going throughout the show as they witnessed what was probably the best performance in the corps 10 year history. As they reached the final chords of First Circle the staff and sections of the crowd were on their feet. What a show!
There wasn't long after the performance as some members entered the stands to watch this seasons closest rivals the Forgemen, from Sheffield, present their Championship performance. As retreat began their was an amazing sense of anticipation and many fingers and toes were crossed as the captions were read out. Things were going in the same direction as they had a week previous in Stafford when the corps came 2nd to the Sheffield corps.
Then the final placements arrived: "And in First place with a score of 901, Northern Star." What a feeling. As we got hold of re-cap sheets we saw that Forgemen had in fact recieved some penalty points. They received 13 timing penalties so the result would still have been good without them. This is one of those moments that makes all the hard work worthwhile. We'd had a great show and were buzzing about that and then to top it off we were British Champions. Fantastic."
