Report: DCE Judges College 2013
The DCE judges held their annual Judges College this weekend Saturday and Sunday 18th-19th May at the Showband Calypso Clubhouse in Zwevegem, Belgium. Bob Thomas (DCE Education Director) led the session which was attended by judges and staff from Ireland, England, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
A report by Brian Yothers, DCE Adjudication Manager
DCE's Judges College is a key part of the judges education program, which also includes a written certification exam, a written re-certification exam (every 3 years), self-evaluations, contest accountability reports, and caption head/mentoring sessions. This year there were 4 re-certification exams completed successfully during the college.
The goals for this year's college were to continue the ongoing education, reinforce the foundation of the judging process and prepare for the 2013 season. We will be raising the bar again in 2013 with a continued focus on education, collaboration, transparency and knowledge transfer.
Caption heads provided their evaluation of the 2012 season and set specific goals and focus areas for 2013 - and practical sessions were held using DVD performances. Specific attention was paid to our paradigms for 2013 and how these are to be applied in the scoring process.
On Sunday we were pleased to have the front ensemble from Jubal join us for a very active and educational session with all of the judges in the music caption. At the same time, Bob facilitated a session with the visual judges, challenging them with some of the top performances of 2012 from the DCI DVDs.
College ended with an open question and answer session for the corps directors and staff. Despite the fact that we had only one corps in attendance (Jubal - Dordrecht NL), there was a very active and educational exchange which provided valuable insights for all involved.
Overall an intense, educational and enjoyable weekend that put us in a great place for the start of the 2013 season!
