Holy Name Cadets celebrate 75th anniversary

Publish Date: 06 Aug 2009 - 964 views

With thousands of alumni, supporters and fans cheering them on, the Holy Name Cadets enter the final week of their 75th anniversary season. Alumni and supporters by the hundreds cheered the corps on during their 75th anniversary weekend celebrations.

From West Chester and Allentown, to Northern New Jersey, the 2009 Holy Name Cadets came to know that 75 years of tradition comes with many faces and names, many of which wore Maroon and Gold long before them.

The celebration kicked off in Allentown on Friday with the DCI Eastern Championships. At least 120 attended Holy Name's DCI East pre-show social at the Allentown Brewworks. Saturday's events moved to Northern New Jersey, the corps' birthplace, where 400 people from throughout Holy Name's colorful 75-year history gathered at Montclair State University for a party and concert by the 2009 corps.

Ninety-three year old John Baumfalk, founder of the corps, made the trip from California for the celebration and was inducted into the Cadets Hall of Fame. Also inducted on Saturday were former member and instructor Paul DeLiberto, former member and historian Greg Cinzio, charter member and instructor Albert Mura and the 1969 first female color guard.

Called the Cadets Summer Diamond Bash, the event at Montclair welcomed 17 drum majors, four former directors of the corps, and hundreds of alumni and supporters traveling from as far as Texas, Canada, Colorado and even England, to recognize this historic milestone. The party was followed by a special concert by the 2009 Holy Name Cadets who also had the opportunity to meet and talk with alumni, then stand together to sing the corps' song.

On Sunday, the party moved to legendary Giants Stadium where the Holy Name Cadets hosted Music In Motion, a drum corps show featuring six of the finest marching ensembles in the activity. Prior to the show, at least 200 alumni and friends of the corps enjoyed a pre-show tent party hosted by the Cadets Alumni Association.

Later that evening, the weekend was topped off by a one-time special performance with the 2009 Holy Name Cadets and the Alumni Corps.
