WGI signs deal to remain in Dayton
Winter Guard International has agreed to keep its headquarters and its world championships in Dayton through 2014. WGI's color guard and percussion competitions have a $10 million economic impact annually on the region.
Held each April, the color guard and percussion events draw 40,000 spectators and 12,000 participants over two weekends, said Jacquelyn Powell, the bureau's president and chief executive. However, the agreement does allow WGI to move either of its world championships once during the six-year term of the contract.
"The option of relocating either world championship during the next six years will give us an opportunity to bring our event to another area while providing WGI with the financial stability we have in Dayton," said Ron Nankervis, executive director of WGI.
The championships have drawn groups from as many as 35 states and overseas competitors such as the United Kingdom, Japan, the Netherlands and South Africa.
