Midsomer Norton Marching Brass celebrate 25 years
On New Years Eve, Midsomer Norton Marching Brass achieved its 25th anniversary. To celebrate the 25th anniversary, the band has a reunion party arranged for Friday January 26th at Prattens Social club. The President of the British Youth Band Association (BYBA), Mr Bob Girvan, will attend to hand out attendance certificates to present members.
Formed in 1981 with 18 members and a few battered old trumpets, the band quickly became a hit with local youngsters looking for something different to do. As the band grew in size and ability, success quickly followed. At the end of 1985 with an average age of just 13 years, the band, competing in a national 4 league system of 170 bands, received promotion to the Premier Class - 'the super league'.
After hitting an all-time membership low in 2004, the band is once again on the march. Membership is approaching 50 and the standard of playing is rising at a meteoric rate. Even though many of the instruments in use are 20 years old, promotion has already been achieved to Division 3.
The band today has a target, to receive an invitation to the World Championships in 2009. The way things are going at the moment, it might just happen. For more information visit the Midsomer Norton Marching Brass Web Site at www.midsomernortonmarchingbrass.com. (Source: byba.org.uk)
