Name: Erik van Leerzem
DCE position: help desk staff
Age: 41
Residence: Middelburg NL
Job: driving instructor
Drum corps history: "I joined
the cadet corps Johan Friso from Middelburg when I was nine years of
age, and played the timpani. When I was sixteen, I moved on to their
big sister corps: Juliana. After two years, I moved to Blue Spirit,
where I was percussion instructor and drum major. In 1988, I quit Blue
Spirit and got married."
Working for DCE from: 2004
Why? "I come from a real 'drum
corps family'. My carreer as a marching member is over, but I still
like being involved in the activity, so that's why I decided to become
a DCE staff member. My daughter is involved in DCE too, she loves it!"
Is it fun off the field?
"Absolutely. As a helpdesk staff member, I have contact with many
people in many languages. I like that. And it's fun to see the corps on
the field. I noticed that the level of the performances have increased
a lot since the 80s, even in the Cadet Class. This year I'm only
present at the DCE Championships in Rotterdam, unfortunately. I'm a
driving instructor, and it's a very busy job with little leisure time."
Greatest drum corps memory:
"The DCE contest in Kortrijk was fantastic. Not only because of the
Blue Devils, but also because it was a great atmosphere with all the
corps stands and thousands of drum corps fans.
