DCE Close Up (10): Adriaan
In the DCE Close Up series you will meet the DCE personnel. Who are these people behind the scenes who offer their leasure time to run drum corps events? In this episode we'll meet Adriaan de Kruiff.
Name: Adriaan de Kruiff
DCE function: chief judge
Age: 47
Residence: Hilversum
Job: company journalist for Dutch public television
Drum corps history:"I started as a member in the drumline of Jong Beatrix and Beatrix. These were not drum corps yet, but at that time they changed to marching band with a color guard. I stayed with Beatrix until 1984, and I was an instructor for Boston Crusaders. Then I decided it was time to do other things in the field of drumming. I played keyboard in the ensemble of Victor Oskam, and teached several corps."
Working for DCE from: 2001
Why? "I was asked by Marco Janssen to set up a judging panel. I has the time to do it, and wanted to help the new organisation. Drum corps in The Netherlands was ceasing because the KNFM didn't do much with it."
Is it fun off the field? "Yes, because I'm still highly involved. I'm still a judge (Music Effect and Ensemble Music). The ensemble part of the music is very interesting. It's not only about technique, it's about making music together. The philosophy in the DCE judging panel is that every corps can win every contest. We don't look at reputation and status. If you strictly follow the judging system, own taste can be avoided."
Greatest drum corps memory: "That's a tough one. The first impression of drum corps was Santa Clara Vanguard 1974 in a short movie of McCormick. Goosebumps! I heard a lot about drum corps, but I had never seen it before. It was awsome! Many great drum corps moments followed after that. With DCE I will always remember the Kortrijk show last year. It was great to judge Blue Devils. That was really 'from a different league'."
