DCE Close Up (9): Jan
In the DCE Close Up series you will meet the DCE personnel. Who are these people behind the scenes who offer their leasure time to run drum corps events? In this episode we'll meet Jan Janssen.
Name: Jan Janssen
DCE function: ticket inspector
Age: 64
Residence: Middelburg
Job: retired, worked as a woodworker
Drum corps history: "I was one of the support staff in Blue Spirit, that started in 1982. My two boys became members of that corps when they were 9 and 10 years old. I never was a marching member myself, but I played the accordion in a band."
Working for DCE since: "The beginning. When Blue Spirit folded, I helped Juliana and Expression for a while, and then DCE came in the picture."
Why? "My boys (Marco and Erik, red.) were already in DCE. I enjoyed working for DCE, and still am. It's a great bunch of people and we're having so much fun."
Is it fun off the field? "Yes, it is. Every organisation need helping hands. And I love watching the corps on the field. How they play, how they march. It's fantastic. When I'm inspecting the tickets at DCE events. There are always people who want to get in without paying for a ticket. But I've done the job for a long time, then you learn how to deal with these situations."
Greatest drum corps moment? When Blue Spirit won the A-Class title, back in the 90s when my boys marched in the corps. The greatest moment with DCE is when all corps come on the field, and perform a music piece with all horn players together."
