DCE Close Up (3): John
In the DCE Close Up series you will meet the DCE personnel. Who are these people behind the scenes who offer their leasure time to run drum corps events? In this episode we'll meet John Volk.
Name: John Volk
DCE function: sound mixer/technician
Age: 35
Residence: Middelburg (NL)
Study: SPW 3 training-college
Drum corps history: "I started my drum corps carreer with Johan Friso. After the forming of Blue Spirit, I joined that corps, and played there until they merged with Juliana. After two years with Juliana (I played in the front ensemble), I left the corps because I wanted to do something completely different."
Working for DCE since: The DCE Championships 2003
Why? "A few years after I left Juliana, DCE called me because they were looking for more staff members. I thought it would be great to see drum corps from behind the scenes. At the DCE Championships 2003 I started as sound mixer and sound technician."
Is it fun off the field? "Definitely. During the shows, my position is in the sound mixer room on the 50! My job is to be sure all audio is working: the microphone, the music during breaks, and the commercial messages. When I started, I already knew a lof of DCE members from my time with Blue Spirit. It's a wonderful team."
Greatest drum corps memory: "I've been involved in drum corps for a long time, so I have to thing about this answer. Blue Spirit participated at the DCH Championships in Nijmegen and Utrecht in the 90s. The performance of my corps were great there. Now that I'm in DCE, all Championship events are fantastic. And I really like the European tune that is played by all corps during the Olympic Retreat. Goose bumps!"
