Good response to the DVD of DCE Championships
Judging from the reactions that Drum Corps Europe has received, the DVD of the 2011 DCE European Championships is proving to be very popular. Drum corps fans have responded positively to the image and sound quality.
For years now, the DCE European Championships have been recorded using high quality cameras. "Less high-quality equipment would work too, but if you want a good end result, you have to start at the beginning", states DCE board member Marco Janssen. "In 2008, we switched to a new camera system and that was a huge step in terms of quality." The excellent filming is done by the permanent crew consisting of Friedo Vermeulen, Erik Janssen and Marco de Roos.
Since last year, the images have been edited by René Schulz, editor at the Dutch television channel SBS6. "You can see that René knows what he is doing", states Janssen. "A good editor goes further than just cutting the images. You also have to have a feel for the right timing and the right image correction. René has an excellent feel for that. It is almost as if the show has been filmed using five or six cameras instead of three."
Buyers of the DVD also comment frequently on the beautiful sound. DCE has been working with Surround Sound since 2004. "Creating the real surround sound feeling isn't easy", Janssen continues. "Since 2006, Show & Marching Music has been our partner when it comes to sound. They can get everything out of the sound, from setting up the microphones to the post production, with a result that we are very proud of."
Janssen is pleased with the positive feedback. "If you fully outsourced a DVD production of this quality to a professional company, the fee would quickly add up to a four-digit figure", the board member asserts. "We don't have a budget like that. That's why we are so glad to be able to call on some people who are happy to help us without being paid, also when it comes to design (Peter Franken), cover photography (Drumcorpsmedia.com) and distribution (David Baden). It is great to see that such a production is possible on a limited budget, and that drum corps fans appreciate it too."
